Di Malaysia

My name is Zura. I am very much in love with Malaysia and you can see why I choose the name Di Malaysia.

The name Malaysia was adopted in 1963 when the existing states of the Federation of Malaya, plus Singapore , North Borneo and Sarawak formed a new federation. Prior to that, the name itself had been vaguely used to refer to areas in Southeast Asia. A Map published in 1914 in Chicago has the word Malaysia printed on it referring to certain territories within the Malay Archipelago. Politicians in the Philippines once contemplated naming their state "Malaysia", but in 1963 Malaysia adopted the name first.

At the time of the 1963 federation, other names were considered: among them was Langkasuka, after the historic kingdom located at the upper section of the Malay Peninsula in the first millennium of the common era. Well, enough of My Story for now.

Do follow my blog for the latest updates on Happenings in Malaysia especially Kuala Lumpur , Johor, Penang.

Homst Restaurant TTDI

Chinese Muslim food is quite a rarity in Malaysia although halal Chinese restaurants could easily fit into this category. The food in this cosy and comfortable outlet is typically Chinese, Cantonese and Teo Chew and serves the homemade variety.

A speciality of this outlet is the bitter gourd with salted eggs which goes well with plain rice. The steamed egg dish is a delicacy hard to find elsewhere is a must. The dish goes well with rice and complements just about anything else on the menu.

Steamed fish dishes come in many styles such as the Thai and Cantonese mix, with a light sauce.

Steamboat dinners are also available and the variety is large. Bits of tasty morsels of fish, meats, squid, prawns, tofu, and vegetables are put in a broth and scooped out when cooked.

Hot Sambal Damansara Perdana

The rustic decor is an indication of the food that is served here. Typically Malay in ambience, the cuisine here is obviously hot and spicy local fare. A variety of sambals are served with every dish. Sambal is basically a chilli based condiment made from dried shrimps or dried anchovies which are blended with lime.

For a good introduction to Malay cuisine, the fried rice hot sambal special is recommended. The rice is flavoured and fried with a mixture of vegetables, prawn and chunks of chicken meat and dried sambal and chillies are added just before serving. Alternatively, the nasi goreng udang is served with a thick paste prawn sambal.

A noodle section is also found in the menu. Among the popular dishes are the mee rebus which is yellow noodles served with a thick soup of spicy flavours. Also served are the Penang laksa or asam laksa which comes with a rich soup thickened with bits of fish.

An unusual noodle item is the mee laksa which is served with anchovy boiled soup and a dollop of sambal further enhancing the spiciness of this dish.

After all the spicy fare, it is only fair to look at the dessert section and the ais batu campur, which can also be classified as a drink, is always a good bet as it comes with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Specialities:

Nasi goreng hot sambal special, nasi lemak, nasi goreng udang and mee laksa

Baverages:

Some traditional drinks such as teh gelombang, teh tarik, ais batu campur are available alongside the standard drinks list

Although food is the focus of this restaurant, some effort has gone into making this a cosy and relaxed outlet. The subtle decor of Sunda is felt through some of the artworks and carvings as well as the dark wooden furnishings..

Serving authentic Indonesian cuisine, more specifically from Sunda, situated at the west province of Jaya, the menu offers spicy fare with the emphasis on seafood. Popular items are the grilled fish dishes and a variety of different species of fish such as the prom fret and snapper fished from a huge tank are used for this.

Fish and other seafood is cooked in many home-cooked variations. These are baked, steamed, basted, roasted and grilled.

Appetizers come in the form of Keropok Melinjo (also known as Emping) which is bitter seed of melinjau pounded flat or the cumi cumi bakar which is squid basted in a sweet sauce and slowly grilled over charcoal.

There is also a good variety of vegetables and these are fried with soya bean paste or belachan.
